Sylvain Levy reveals his personal relationships with the artists he collects and the ever-changing landscapes in which they create, while Jane DeBevoise explains the nature of researching and documenting China's contemporary culture at Asia Art Archive.

This discussion precedes the opening of the exhibition "New voices: a dslcollection story,” which features works by nine artists: Chen Wei, Gao Lei, Gao Weigang, Hou Yong, Hu Weiyi, Li Wei, Wang Yuyang, Wang Sishun and Zhao Zhao. Curated by Beili Wang, the exhibition is inspired by the dsl collection, a body of work procured by Sylvain and Dominique Levy that documents the multiple narratives of art and culture in contemporary China. The exhibition is on view from May 7 through June 18, 2016.
Speaker Biographies:
Jane DeBevoise is Chair of the Board of Directors of Asia Art Archive in Hong Kong and New York. Prior to moving to Hong Kong in 2002, Ms. DeBevoise was Deputy Director of the Guggenheim Museum, responsible for museum operations and exhibitions globally. She joined the Museum in 1996 as Project Director of China: 5000 Years, a large-scale exhibition of traditional and modern Chinese art that was presented in 1998 at the Guggenheim museums in New York and Bilbao. Prior to 1996, Ms. DeBevoise was Managing Director at Bankers Trust Company where she worked for 14 years in New York, Hong Kong, Tokyo and London. Ms. DeBevoise has a BA from Tufts University, an MA from the University of California, Berkeley, and a PhD from The University of Hong Kong, all in art history. Ms. DeBevoise was appointed by the Home Affairs Bureau of the Hong Kong Government to the Committee for Museums 2004-2007 and to the Museums Advisory Group for the development of the West Kowloon Cultural District 2006 – 2007. She is a Trustee of Asian Cultural Council.
Sylvain Levy is the co-founder of the dslcollection. It was in 2005 when he and his wife, Dominique Levy, created their private collection of Chinese contemporary art, named the dslcollection.
The collection is open to the wider public through both traditional in-person viewings as well as through digital technology. In 2014, the dslcollection was recognised by Larry's List as one of the top three most visible private collections online. In May 2014, the dslcollection also received the inaugural Asia Prize from The Art Newspaper, which recognizes the most outstanding contributions to the promotion of arts development within Asia.
