Contemporary painter Tang Yongxiang was born in Hubei, China, in 1977 and graduated with an MFA from the painting department at Hubei Institute of Fine Arts, Hubei, China in 2007. Since then, he has focused his practice on deconstructing the two-dimensional image or visual, charging his canvasses with multiple layers through which an idea, a fragment or a consciousness slowly emerges. With this abstract figurative style, he often half finishes his objects, marking a line between representation and reality.
Tang’s works have featured in solo exhibitions including "Tang Yongxiang," Magician Space, Beijing, China (2014) and "HIDE," Hemuse Gallery, Beijing, China (2014). Groups shows include "Nocturnal Friendships," Lehmann Maupin Hong Kong (2015); "XXX – The Next 10 Years of Contemporary Art," Today Art Museum, Beijing, China (2011); "Experience/Gorgeous," Fengfeng Art Project, Beijing, China (2009); "Chinese Oil Paintings of Contemporary and Academic Seminar," Ho-Am Gallery, Seoul, Korea (2008); "Uncollectivism – Wuhan Post 70s Contemporary Art," Soka Art Center, Beijing, China (2008); "Luo Zhongli: Scholarship Exhibition," Chongqing Art Museum, Chongqing, China (2007); and "Inside and Outside of the Image," Hubei Institute of Fine Arts Gallery, Wuhan, China (2006).
He currently lives and works in Beijing, China.
